Circular Fashion Brand

The institute partnered with SixR to develop FOR TOMORROW, a Circular Fashion Brand with GBC. The design of this garment was informed by three Zero Waste smart hoodie prototypes. As part of this partnership, the institute is supporting the build of a circular economy digital platform - to be released.

The BSI Global Mass Timber Database

The BSI Global Mass Timber Database is an accessible repository for mass timber structures around the globe, featuring 860+ buildings, two navigation methods, advanced filtering options, and a building submission form.

The Observatory

Internal Initiatives

A database of 500+ smart sustainable case studies which inspires and informs design for future generations. As part of the research, 1 book and 2 papers have been published, and 12 papers are set to be published in the fall.

BSI Smart Sustainability Charette

George Brown College

A charette composed of 140+ students and 50+ thought leaders, which addressed significant climate challenges across various subjects and geographical areas. As part of this charette, 9 solutions have been proposed with 2 currently in development.

Zero Waste Apparel

George Brown College

An intensive workshop to become the creative mind behind GBC's first sustainable fashinon brand, which addressed the prevailing take-make-waste model within the fashion industry, and focused on incorporating elements of circular design, tech-enabled smart solutions, and garment innovation. The 3 proposed solutions have went on to inform the creation of For Tomorrow Circular Fashion Brand with GBC.

Aluminum-Galvanic Air Generator

Alumapower

A collaboration with Alumapower in market exploration and identifying the prime customer base for their Aluminum-Galvanic Air Generator. As a result of this collaboration, 20 potential commercial partners were identified and 2 solutions were proposed. This partnership is ongoing.

Future of Work Charette

No Fixed Address

An exploration in remagining the future of work for creative workers, which drew insights a research report created by BSI and No Fixed Address that encompassed over 100 case studies, more than 30 secondary reports, 10 primary user interviews, and 41 survey responses. As a result of this exploration, the team proposed a work connectivity tool and spatial management solution - to be prototyped and potentially developed.

Net Zero Building Forum

RBC

A collaboration with RBC on the Decarbonization of the Built Environment, composed of 70 industry thought leaders composed of developers, construction firms, architecture and engineering firms, building owners and managers, associations, community-based organizations, utilities and non-profits; and 15 students from Toronto and Milan documenting, visualizing and assisting with facilitation. A report was launched with RBC: Climate Action Institute on May 17.

Mass Timber Research

Based in the institute's student development philosophy, the institute is currently leading a group of 10 coop students through Lifecycle Assessment and Project Costing projects, Scan of global mass timber building projects, a Digital Media curriculum assets project, a Draft curriculum project, and digital twin project.

Sustainable Food Transportation

A partnership with Hydrocool in which the institute assisted in research, created identity and marketing materials, and assessed AI potential for their upcoming project.

ESG Immersive Learning Series

Toronto Region Board of Trade

Empowering business professionals with real world, practical tools for leveraging ESG to elevate competitive advantages, this three-session course facilitated by George Brown College and the Brookfield Sustainability Institute helped participants learn how to unite cross-functional teams to face sustainability challenges and how to generate solutions that can drive real impact within their organizations.
